Unit 1. Egypt in Literature and Film: Sustainable Development Challenges
In this unit, each text (short stories and films) is paired with a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) as a means of focusing discussion on the complex challenges and opportunities in modern-day Egypt. We will discuss the role of literary and creative texts in raising awareness and action around sustainability efforts.
The texts and paired SDGs are included in menu listings beneath this tab.
Unit 2. Street Art and Social Justice: The Rhetoric of the Visual
In this unit, we will be examining how street art speaks, that is, how street artists communicate messages through the content, design, and placement of their art. Focusing specifically on the power of street art to engage social justice issues, including inequality, war, injustice, and overconsumption, we will develop skills and processes for deep analysis of this powerful textual form.
All readings for this unit are posted in iLearn (and annotated through Perusall).
Unit 3. Language and Identity
This unit examines how we construct and communicate diverse aspects of our identities through language, from the single word or sentences we utter to the stories and poetry we create. We will reflect on how language and literature shapes our conceptions of ourselves and our relationship to the world and the ways we use language and literature to reshape the world.
